Portuguese Laurel

The Prunus lusitanica is a quintessentially elegant evergreen, highly valued for its dense, dark, glossy green foliage and its classic, formal aesthetic. It is an exceptionally reliable and refined alternative to English Laurel, featuring smaller, more delicate, pointed leaves and striking red-toned stems. In early summer, it produces beautiful, fragrant, creamy-white flower spikes, followed by dark purple-black berries. Its naturally neat, conical shape makes it an ideal choice for hedging, screening, or as an architectural topiary specimen that remains lush and impeccable throughout the entire year.

Sunlight

Full Sun to Partial Shade. It is highly adaptable and will grow happily in full sun or dappled shade. In warmer areas, some light afternoon shade helps to keep the foliage looking its darkest and most lustrous.

Watering

Moderate. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant. However, for young or newly planted specimens and especially for those in containers ensure regular, thorough watering during dry spells to maintain its dense foliage.

Soil & Drainage

Thrives in almost any well-drained soil, including chalky or slightly acidic conditions. It dislikes waterlogged ground, so ensure good drainage if your soil is heavy clay. In containers, use a high-quality loam-based compost to provide the nutrients and drainage required for long-term health.
